Carbon Farming in Northern Australia

Right Way Fire

Carbon farming awareness film

BushTV produced a carbon farming awareness and promotion film for the Department of Environment, focused on savanna fire management across northern Australia. The project explored how traditional Indigenous fire practices are being combined with contemporary science to reduce emissions and generate carbon credits.

Presented by Ernie Dingo and produced by Tom Hearn for BushTV, the film highlighted the leadership of Aboriginal ranger groups working across vast savanna regions. Through controlled early dry season burns, communities are reducing the intensity of late season wildfires, protecting biodiversity and creating measurable environmental and economic outcomes.

The story positioned carbon farming not simply as a technical climate solution, but as a cultural practice rooted in thousands of years of land management knowledge. It demonstrated how Indigenous led fire management strengthens Country, creates employment and supports intergenerational knowledge transfer.

Filmed on location across northern savanna landscapes, the project brought visibility to one of Australia’s most significant environmental initiatives, showing how caring for Country and carbon abatement can work together in practical and sustainable ways.
