BushTV produced The Right Way Design, a documentary film created for Kaunitz Yeung Architecture, capturing the story and impact of the PAMS Healthcare Hub in Newman. The Sydney-based practice was awarded the 2021 Good Design Award for Sustainability for the project. At the awards night, the film received a standing ovation, reflecting not only the architectural achievement but the deeper social and cultural significance of the work.
Opened in July 2020, the PAMS Healthcare Hub is the first purpose-built primary healthcare facility in Newman, serving approximately 10,000 people, primarily Indigenous Australians. Since opening, the hub has recorded more than 15,000 patient visits. The facility integrates the PAMS head office, a primary health clinic supporting general practice, maternal and child health and dental services, four-chair haemodialysis, and allied health spaces for visiting clinicians.
The film explores how design can reduce harm. A central aim of the project was to minimise the emotional, financial and mental health impacts experienced by Martu and Nyiyaparli people forced to leave Country and family for treatment in Perth. By bringing dialysis and primary care closer to home, the building itself becomes part of the healing. Externally, rammed earth sourced directly from the site grounds the structure physically and symbolically in Country.
The design process was undertaken in close consultation with PAMS and the local community, ensuring that architectural decisions were culturally appropriate and responsive to place. The Right Way Design documents more than a building. It tells the story of architecture shaped by listening, consultation and community need. It demonstrates how thoughtful design, when guided by cultural respect and long-term partnership, can strengthen wellbeing and support people to remain connected to Country.
