Shady Camp Retreat

The retreat at night

(NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE) Shady Camp Retreat is located near Yeppoon in a private bush setting 5 minutes to the remote beaches of Keppel Sands in Central Queensland, Australia. A plunge saltwater pool, yoga mats, fire pit and outdoor art studio cater for small creative/family/healing groups of up to 10 people. School day groups can be up to 50 people.

The local Aboriginal clan group Taroombul occupied this area for many thousands of years. Early pioneers and miners picked up on the healing nature of the sea breezes and climate and the area was first settled as a place to heal and convalesce.

The layout and feel of the place is loosely based on my time spent on various remote Aboriginal outstations. The unique eco friendly design captures sea breezes and the bush setting offers complete privacy.

The retreat sleeps up to 10 people in style with 8 king size singles (can be made into 4 King size beds) and 4 normal but luxurious single bunk beds.  There is also room for camping with basic outdoor facilities. A plunge saltwater pool with decks and a BBQ area with plenty of shady trees for reading and relaxing will meet the needs of the discerning visitor.

There is no TV, phone or internet connection. Yoga mats, traditional fire pit and outdoor art studio cater for small creative, family or healing groups of up to 10 people. Seasonal herb and veggie gardens, fruit trees and bush tucker plants supply foods at various times of the year.

The home is fully self-contained with 3 large bedrooms all with king size single and single beds.  Luxurious Sheridan linen, towels and bathrobes are available for each guest. Just bring your clothes, books, workshop and art gear, camera and a food order.  There are numerous board games and a ping pong table for epic competitions.

You can also bring your dog as there is an outhouse for them that can be shut at night. Keep in mind that the property is not fenced and you will need to ensure your pet is safely contained.  No pets are allowed inside please.

Looking out to the trees is a very large empty sun drenched studio room with shiny timber floors for yoga, meditation or general relaxing or work-shopping. Dining for 10 people is supplied. Dining is available both inside and alfresco.

Nighttimes can be spent around the fire pit looking at the stars. This spot has shade and sea breezes most of the year round. Local fresh seafood can be supplied upon request which you can cook on the fire or BBQ.

If you are after an inspiring and comfortable space for relaxation, creative and/or well-being retreats, tranquility, the sounds of the bush, long walks on deserted beaches and a place to have long lazy campfires and afternoon sleeps then this is for you. The property is suitable for small groups, families or couples.  Artists, well-being retreats and family re-union’s will go well here also.

We are connected with the local Darambul people (the traditional owners of the country around here) so we encourage our guests to meet and go through a traditional smoking ceremony and welcome.

A short boat trip away from the retreat and you are at Keppel Island or one of the 14 Islands just off the Capricorn Coast. Around the corner from the Retreat there is a crocodile farm with daily tours and a restaurant and also a beachside pub, post office and boat ramp at the small beachside community of Keppel Sands only 5 minutes away. Horse riding and caving is also a short drive away.

During the key handover I will give guests a tour of the retreat and go through local maps and interesting activities. This can be done online or on site if I’m not away on a filming trip.

A short drive and you can meet the locals down at the beachside watering hole or at the boat ramp catching fish – friendly outback people. Kookaburras make a racket at sunset. There is loads of local wildlife around including kangaroos, echidnas, emus, crocodiles, and wide variety of birds and mammals.

If you want to visit the coast and go down to the little pub and shop you will need a car as the beaches are five minutes away, preferably a 4WD if you want to explore surrounding areas and drive along the beaches etc.

The stars are amazing as there are no city lights etc. Camp fires are fun and plenty of firewood is available from off-cuts at local mill.
